Required Compliance Disclosures (Significant Financial Interests & External Activities)

An "investigator" for research compliance purposes is any individual, regardless of title, role or position, who is responsible for the design, conduct, or reporting of research on a proposal to a relevant federal agency/under a relevant solicitation. For more information about UVA requirements and resources for disclosers, see the Research Conflict of Interest website.

  • A Disclosure Profile must be completed in UVA's conflict of interest solution (RUVA COI)  prior to submission of an external funding proposal (or activation of a transferred award) and must be updated at least annually (every 12 months), or within 30 days of adding an SFI or EA, to remain in compliance.

If you have not yet been added to a proposal or award in UVA's electronic research administration system (RUVA), please email Ask_RCOI@virginia.edu and request access to submit your initial Disclosure Profile.

Required Compliance Training

UVA requires that certain Compliance Training must be completed when an award is funded. OSP will not set up a sponsored account until all investigators have completed the following required online courses. Instructions on how to create a CITI account, affiliate an existing CITI account with UVA, and enroll in training are available HERE.

  • Conflict of Interest - Must be completed initially and then every 4 years.
  • Undue Foreign Influence: Risks and Mitigations - Currently this is a one-time training requirement; however, this may change due to evolving sponsor requirements.

Click HERE to log into CITI with UVA Netbadge.

Additional training may be required to meet sponsor, regulatory, and institutional requirements. The following is one example:

  • Responsible Conduct in Research (RCR) - The National Science Foundation (NSF) has for many years required that all supported trainees complete RCR training. However, NSF subsequently expanded the training requirement to include principal investigators and other senior/key personnel on NSF awards issued after 7/31/2023.

Research Compliance & Ethics

Do you work with animals?

If you will be using animals for research, testing, or teaching at UVA, check out this link for a good place to start. The IACUC Office, or ACUC Office as it’s called at UVA, is always here to help you find your way through the maze. Please feel free to contact us at any time. If you need to move animals here from another institution, please contact Sanford Feldman, Director, Comparative Medicine. You will need Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC, ACUC) approval to order, possess, or conduct research using vertebrate animals. Their staff can help with protocol development, protocol pre-review, and required training for you and your laboratory staff. Such transfers usually are made under a Material Transfer Agreement between your current institution and UVA. Learn more about Animal Care and Use.  See ACUC new to UVA page.

Do you work with controlled substances?

If you will be using controlled substances you will need to acquire a license. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Virginia Board of Pharmacy (VBP) require that all locations which store Controlled Substances (CS) for use in research must be registered with both the DEA and VBP, and adhere to the other regulations regarding procurement, record keeping, administration (to animals or in vitro), and destruction. Learn more about Controlled Substances.

Do you work with Human Subjects?

We have two Institutional Review Boards, one for Health Sciences Research and one for Social & Behavioral Sciences. Training requirements depend on what type of research you are doing. If you have questions after visiting the site, please contact us, we can help! Learn more about working with human subjects.
