Research Integrity Program

UVA’s Research Integrity Program includes advising the research community to conduct research responsibly and investigating allegations of research misconduct.

Integrity in scholarship and teaching is a fundamental value upon which the University is founded. Without integrity, we could not justify the privilege of academic freedom intrinsic to scholarship and education, nor could we provide to society the advancements of knowledge that derive from free and open inquiry.

    Responsibility of the Academic Community

    It is a fundamental responsibility of UVA faculty, staff, students and administration to maintain the trust of the public in all research and scholarly activity and to preserve the university's reputation for high standards of scholarly integrity. It is our shared responsibility to:

    • Honesty and fairness in proposing, performing, and reporting research
    • Accuracy and fairness in representing contributions to research proposals and reports
    • Proficiency and fairness in peer review
    • Collegiality in scientific interactions, communications and sharing of resources
    • Disclosure of conflicts of interest
    • Protection of human subjects in the conduct of research
    • Humane care of animals in the conduct of research
    • Adherence to the mutual responsibilities of mentors and trainees
    • Report suspected academic and research misconduct
    • Assure that academic and research misconduct is dealt with in a timely and effective manner

    Integrity of Scholarship and Research

    Integrity in scholarship and teaching is a fundamental value upon which UVA is founded. The university's Research Integrity Program provides the policy outlining the ethical expectations for, and responsibilities of, its research community, and the procedures for investigating research misconduct allegations.

    Plagiarism Detection

    UVA faculty can evaluate their draft grant proposals and research manuscripts for risks of plagiarism by contacting UVA's Research Integrity Officer (Dave Hudson), we use a plagiarism detection software application to check your work for missed citations and/or duplication prior to submission or publication prevents research and scholarship misconduct, and helps ensure research integrity.

    Anonymous Reporting

    Allegations of misconduct can be reported confidentially to the University's Research Integrity Officer (RIO) in the Office of the Vice President for Research through the University's Compliance Helpline.

    Research Integrity Officer

    The Research Integrity Officer (RIO) receives and manages Allegations of Misconduct in Research within the UVA community.  Research Misconduct includes Plagiarism, Fabrication, Falsification, and other research activities that seriously deviate from accepted practices in the research community. 

    The RIO also manages authorship and data disputes according to UVA’s Authorship and Research Data: Management, Control, and Access guidelines.   In this role, the RIO provides advice to administrators, faculty and students in best authorship and data management practices.
